Hungarian chemical industry companies have significantly reduced their energy and water consumption in recent weeks in response to the Government’s call, in order to support the stability of the electricity system and energy security during the crisis situation. The nearly 200 MW reduction achieved by small, medium and large chemical companies represents roughly 25% of the nationwide results, and these effective measures uniformly support the management of the critical situation that has developed in the electricity and water supply systems.
The Hungarian Chemical Industry Association (MAVESZ), as the professional advocacy organisation of one of Hungary’s most significant industrial sectors, continuously monitors the critical electricity and water supply situation that has emerged in the country. In response to the Government’s call, several of our member companies joined immediately among those enterprises that voluntarily contribute to managing the difficult situation through electricity and water consumption reduction measures.
In recent days, our member companies have submitted their commitments to us. These clearly show the substantial measures taken by the chemical industry — one of the most energy‑intensive sectors of the Hungarian economy — to address the critical electricity and water supply crisis. From our largest manufacturing members (BorsodChem Zrt., MOL Petrolkémia Zrt., Nitrogénművek Zrt., Zoltek Zrt., Dunastyr Zrt.) to dozens of smaller manufacturing, trading and service companies, all reported rapid and significant actions.
Based on information received from nearly two dozen association members, MAVESZ member companies have collectively reduced their electricity consumption by close to 200 MW and significantly curtailed their water usage as well. This reduction accounts for approximately 25% of the nationwide results. Since several chemical companies also operate their own electricity generation units (gas turbines, solar PV systems), many have offered to supply part of their electricity production to the national grid operated by MAVIR. To achieve these savings, our member companies have reduced production, shut down production lines or limited capacity utilisation, rescheduled maintenance activities, and introduced individual saving measures (mandatory home office, restrictions on the use of air conditioners, electrical appliances, lighting, etc.). These measures will remain in place as long as the critical situation persists, and companies will consult MAVIR in advance regarding restarting or increasing production.
In addition to large consumers, many member companies reported that — following their internal calls — employees are personally trying to contribute to reducing energy consumption both within the company and in their homes. Although the consumption reduction of a single person or family is “a drop in the ocean”, it demonstrates the commitment of chemical industry workers and the strength of social solidarity in this difficult situation.
